The beginning disguised as the end.

Humus is the dark matter of soil, the decomposed remains of everything that ever grew. The alchemists called it prima materia, the first matter, the thing from which any transformation begins. We mistake it for ending. A white bowl held this much green and brown and yellow not because it is over but because it is ready.
